Episode No. 5 recap: "The Ultimate Fighter 12: Team GSP vs. Team Koscheck"

Team Koscheck is officially on the ropes as the fifth episode of "The Ultimate Fighter 12" begins.

Team St-Pierre has racked up three consecutive wins in tournament competition since teams were selected with Team Koscheck's Jeff Lentz, Aaron Wilkinson and Andy Main suffering losses.

It's do-or-die time for Team Koscheck.

After random clips of seedy-side Las Vegas, episode No. 5 begins with an informal prayer from Koscheck, a season-one veteran who's seeing cracks in his team's facade. The welterweight contender wants them to believe in the training methods of the American Kickboxing Academy, which brought fame not only to him, but also to fighters such as Jon Fitch, Mike Swick, Cain Velasquez and others who don't work for the UFC and shall remain nameless.

For an additional kick in the butt, "Kos" introduces the team to Fitch, who lends his expertise with some hard sparring. The perennial contender is impressed with the skill level he encounters, and team member Nam Phan is happy to take his beating. All this hard work is going to pay off, right?

Back at the house, Team GSP's Alex "Bruce Leeroy" Cacares is at it again. Teammate Michael Johnson puts in a load of laundry only to discover Alex has spiked Nam's fabric softener with bleach. Expletives ensue. Alex helps Michael fish out the clothing all the while sporting a smirk. He's sorry, but he's not that sorry. Michael is disgusted and says what half of America is thinking: "Bruce Leeroy" needs his mouth washed out with soap.

"My bad," Alex says as he slinks away.

Next, it's time for Team GSP's practice, and the guys find a special guest waiting for them: champion Muay Thai kickboxer Jean-Charles Skarbowski. St-Pierre sits his team down for a disclaimer. Skarbowski, he says, is not your average MMA guy. He's a "free thinker" who could seriously hurt them if they try to get a leg up in the ring. And he's probably a little cranky after a 14-hour flight from Paris, so it's wise to stay in his good graces.

Jean-Charles comes in shirtless and shoeless wearing trunks adorned with a gold skull, and instantly, you get the sense he's cut from a different cloth. According to Team GSP's Dane Sayers, he sleeps three hours a night, likes to spar drunk, and eats MMA fighters for breakfast. This should be fun.

Well, not really. Dane gets tossed around like a kid playing with his dad, and Jean-Charles's granite shins punish Cody McKenzie's arms. "Ca va?" the Frenchman asks, and he hasn't broken a sweat. Watching teammates feel sympathy pains.

St-Pierre says this crazy Frenchman is really a good guy; he's just spent too much time in Thailand, where they fight drunk and stoned. In a gesture as alien as his U.S. citizenship, the welterweight champion mimes smoking a joint to illustrate his point.

More Team GSP members fall to Jean-Charles, who seems quite amused at all these silly MMA fighters trying to hang with him. He blows a kiss to France after dropping Cody.

"He beat us all up, and he was drunk," the Alaskan says. "That guy can fight."

Back at the house, Jeff Lentz attempts an intervention on Alex's addiction to idiocy. Ease up, he says. Alex explains that he is who he is, regardless of whether he has friends or not. (He says the act works on women. Men? Not so much.) In the subsequent confessional, Alex finally comes to the realization that his housemates don't like him, and he's OK with it. After all, it's easier to fight people you don't like, he reasons.

It's time to announce the next fight, and Josh looks on dejectedly as Georges picks his fighter, Spencer Paige, to fight Team Koscheck's Nam.

Combat doctorate and Team GSP coach John Danaher predicts a favorable outcome if Spencer can keep it standing. Josh is cautiously optimistic after three losses, but he thinks its a good matchup.

Spencer thinks he's got the mental edge when Nam avoids eye contact during the official staredown and considers giving his opponent a hug. Nam doesn't have time for that, though. He's too busy running a mini-marathon in the fighter house's backyard. Team GSP looks on and drinks some Haterade on his fitness regimen. Spencer and Cody realize they should probably look busy and walk off for some likely pushups.

Back at the gym, there's a rivalry brewing between Cody and rival coach Josh. It's not clear why they don't like each other, but after some mild jawing, Josh says, "If I had his looks and his barrel chest, I wouldn't be talking too much." OK. Cody, meanwhile, says it's all fun and games.

The celebrity guest train keeps rolling for Team Koscheck, who's surprised to see Chuck Liddell walk through the doors, as we find out, fresh off a loss to Rich Franklin at UFC 115. The team goes fanboy on "The Iceman," who tries to keep a smile as his supporters tell him how good he did before Rich knocked him out cold. It's impossible not to see sadness seeping through with the former champ. When Sako Chivitchian asks him for career advice, we get a glimpse of a man who's coming to terms with the end of a career in a very unforgiving sport.

"It's hard to step away from it," he says. "It's the hardest part about making the decision. You miss it."

At weigh-ins, Josh ribs Georges some more, and in another highly questionable use of insult, he tells the champion, "Kiss me now, and I'll leave MMA." OK.

After letting his feelings boil to the surface, Georges says with a smile that he'll pimp Josh. Cody is thrilled.

Josh takes a gander into Team GSP's locker room and meets Jean-Charles. He ribs the kickboxer, and if you look closely, you can see a few teammates think, "BAD IDEA!" The welterweight contender lets up a bit and samples a peace offering of gin and juice that Jean-Charles somehow has sneaked into his water bottle. Cody uses his safe surroundings to take a shot at his new nemesis.

With Spencer and Nam on weight, it's fight time. And we've got:

Team GSP's Spencer Paige (7-2) vs. Team Koscheck's Nam Phan (16-7)

The southpaw Spencer quickly establishes momentum with a series of hard kicks to Nam's body. Nam soldiers on in spite of the shots and looks to employ a straight right to his opponent's chin. He's taken off his feet once by a hard leg kick, but he manages to find a home for his punch and briefly deposits Spencer on his butt.

Overall, though, it's Spencer who's doing most of the damage. He's mixing kicks to the body with stiff punching combinations and is more accurately sniping at Nam, who nonetheless charges ahead.

Finally, Nam blocks a kick to the body, and the fight does a complete 180-degree turn. The Southern California veteran quickly takes Spencer down and begins a furious stretch of ground and pound. Spencer looks helpless. He's taking shot after shot against the cage, and referee Herb Dean is inching closer. A few upkicks buy him some time, but Nam ends the round in dominant fashion when he leaps into side control and secures a kimura that looks like a done deal. Spencer winces but guts out the remaining five seconds of the round.

In between gratuitous shots of Playboy playmate and UFC ring card girl Arianny Celeste's behind, Spencer says his left foot is broken. Georges tells him not to think about it. But when the round gets started, it's clear Spencer is not the same guy. He lands a kick to Nam's body and visibly bunny hops on his right leg. Nam turns up the tempo with punches and high kicks, and Spencer is now a guy on the defensive.

Inexplicably, Nam never attacks his opponent's damaged leg.

Spencer nobly fights on in spite of the pain in his foot, but he's simply not equipped to match Nam's striking pressure. He curses himself as the fight begins to slip away.

Meanwhile, Nam continues to rack up points with his hands and his feet. His right hand is landing regularly, and he's attacking the body as well.

When the final bell rings, the fight's winner is not in question.

In his post-fight confessional, a defeated Spencer says he likely broke his foot when Nam checked one of his kicks, and he also broke his hand throwing a punch. Not great conditions for a good performance.

Judges declare Nam the winner, and that's a wrap with the fourth elimination fight.

Josh is ecstatic and takes an easy opportunity to gloat. Back in the locker room, Team Koscheck regresses 10 years and pounds on the common wall between the teams as Team GSP mourns Spencer's loss. Georges looks pissed.
